Memorial Day weekend is almost upon us, and like you, I am excited for the long weekend ahead. I know many of us will spend time in good company with friends and family, chatting over a meal and enjoying outside. For those of you who will have the chance to spend this weekend away from work, I hope you get some well-deserved rest and relaxation to recharge your batteries.

Now, being as this is the unofficial kickoff to summer, many of you will be working through the weekend, welcoming thousands of visitors into our forests and grasslands over the next few days. To you, I say thanks for making everyone feel welcomed and for keeping them safe as they enjoy the great outdoors.

Regardless of your work status this weekend, I encourage everyone to not lose sight of the significance of Memorial Day and why we celebrate it. Thousands of people gave their lives—the ultimate sacrifice—so we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. They fought bravely and honorably in military service for this great country of ours.

This weekend, let’s remember together to honor these brave people who stood on the front lines in the name of democracy, the hallmark of our identity as citizens of the United States. Many of us have been directly touched by the loss of loved ones who died defending our democracy in military service. Our thoughts are with you. If you have a chance to, I encourage you to participate in Memorial Day services, go to a parade, visit your local veterans’ memorial park or display the American flag proudly where you live.

In the Forest Service, nearly 16% of our employees are veterans, many of whom fought alongside those who perished. And many of you have family who were, or are, in the service. I understand you may find this weekend to be difficult. If you are having a hard time, I’m thinking of you. And if you find yourselves in need of support, you can reach our Employee Assistance Program online or by calling (833) 621-2989 or, if you need it, the national suicide crisis hotline, which can be reached by dialing 988.

As for any weekend festivities, please remember and practice our core value of safety. Summer activities bring a whole new set of dangers, so be mindful—and come back safely from your planned time off, refreshed and ready to dive back into service.

I am grateful for you all and your service to this country through your work with the Forest Service.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
