Remembering why we observe Memorial Day

It’s hard to believe, but Memorial Day weekend is already upon us. Many of you, including me, are looking forward to the long weekend ahead. I hope you get to enjoy some rest and relaxation this weekend with friends and family.

I also know many of you will continue working through the weekend—after all, it is the unofficial kickoff to summer, and our forests and grasslands will welcome thousands of visitors over the next few days. Thank you for welcoming visitors and keeping them safe as they enjoy the great outdoors.

I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the significance of Memorial Day and why we celebrate it. Thousands of people gave their lives—the ultimate sacrifice—so we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. They fought bravely and honorably in military service for this great country of ours.

This weekend there are many ways to honor those who have given their lives for our freedoms: Take part in Memorial Day services, go to a parade, visit your local veterans’ memorial park or display the American flag proudly where you live.

In the Forest Service, nearly 16% of our employees are veterans, many of whom fought alongside those who perished. And many of you have family who were, or are, in the service. I understand you may find this weekend to be difficult. If you are having a hard time, I’m thinking of you and lifting you up. And if you find yourselves going through some tough times and in need of support, you can reach our Employee Assistance Program online or by calling (833) 621-2989 or, if you need it, the national suicide crisis hotline, which can be reached by dialing 988.

I am grateful for you all and your service to this country through your work with the Forest Service.

Be safe this holiday weekend.
