Budget Myth vs. Fact: Salary & working for external partners

August 13, 2021

We are providing information about the implementation of our new agency budget structure through myth-busting and sharing facts that help us all learn together.

Myth #7: I don’t need to charge my salary to the reimbursable job code on work performed for external partners, such as for a state agency or in support of International Programs, because I am fully funded.

Fact #7: The criteria for charging to a reimbursable job code is the same as it has been in previous years and is not affected by the new budget structure. We are legally required to charge salary to reimbursable funding when working on reimbursable projects.

Historically, approximately 2.1% of Forest Service salary is covered through external funding sources, where the work performed is primarily for the benefit of another entity. Additionally, any other salary and expense item related to reimbursable work should also be charged to reimbursable funding. This includes items such as such as travel or awards.
