USDA: The Big Three, part 7
Good morning,
Here is the next installment of the “Big Three” questions we are hearing from you. As always, please continue to check our FAQs and the USDA Workplace Safety Plan, which are updated frequently, and reach out to futureofwork@usda.gov for any questions not already addressed.
Sincerely,
The Future of Work Taskforce
1. What is the new COVID Omicron variant?
The recently identified Omicron sub-variant BA.2, also known as the “stealth variant,” has not yet been designated as a “variant of interest” or a “variant of concern.” Early data show that its mutations make it even more transmissible than the currently predominant Omicron BA.1 variant, but it also appears to be less able to evade vaccine-induced immunity levels in humans. Consequently, vaccinations and boosters are still the very best mitigation factors to protect from illness, hospitalization and death.
2. What protective resources will USDA make available to protect employees when returning to their physical workplace?
Masks and other safety supplies (hand sanitizer, wipes) will be provided to employees returning to the physical office. Current USDA policy is that all employees, contractors and visitors must wear masks in all USDA buildings and government-owned or leased vehicles, regardless of vaccination status.
As a reminder, here is some easy guidance on masks from the CDC:
USDA is establishing a testing process for screening of unvaccinated employees, diagnosis following possible exposure and some other circumstances dependent on agency mission and operational needs. Additional information on this program and related policies will be coming out within the month, prior to March 28.
To read about additional safety measures please visit USDA COVID-19 Workplace Safety Plan and Frequently Asked Questions. Both documents are currently undergoing updates and will be released next week.
3. Who should I contact to discuss my remote/telework eligibility or status?
As announced on Jan. 31, if you have not already been notified of your telework or remote work status, you will receive that notification by no later than Feb. 11. In the meantime, employees are encouraged to review the Telework and Remote Work Programs Departmental Regulation 4080-811-002.
Employees may seek clarification about the initial notification from their supervisor should there be questions about their eligibility or potential changes to their eligibility that would fall within the purview of the Telework and Remote Work Programs DR 4080-811-002.
