Remembering Matt Rollins
Dr. Matt Rollins, an experienced and dedicated public servant, passed away 0n Aug. 18th, after battling a long illness. Matt served as the program manager for Fire, Fuels, and Smoke at the Pacific Northwest Research Station, a role he embraced with commitment and passion since 2017.
Matt brought over 34 years of experience in fire science to the PNW Research Station, significantly shaping the field through his leadership and expertise. Before joining PNW, Matt served as the national program leader for Wildland Fire and Fuels in the Forest Service’s Washington Office of Research and Development. His career also included managing large research programs at PNW and the Missoula Fire Sciences Lab and overseeing all fire science and response-related activities at the U.S. Geological Survey National Headquarters. His extensive knowledge and commitment to fire science were further recognized through his role as a Joint Fire Sciences Program board member.
Matt was not just a scientist, but a cherished colleague and friend as well. His quick wit and genuine character left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working with him. He was a central figure in the Station Management Team, where his unique perspective and contributions were always valued.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Matt was an individual of remarkable intellect and kindness. He earned his doctorate in watershed management from the University of Arizona, an master’s degree in forestry, and a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology from the University of Montana. These academic achievements were a testament to his lifelong dedication to understanding and protecting our natural environment.
As we mourn the loss of Matt, we also celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind—a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire the field of fire science for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him during this difficult time.
