Around the Forest Service: July 2024

July 31, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C.—At a town hall-style event at the University of Maine in Orono, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the Forest Service is making $190 million available in Inflation Reduction Act funding to help private forest landowners adapt to and mitigate climate impacts to retain working forestlands.

We celebrated National Wildland Firefighter Day on July 2, to show how much we appreciate and support our wildland fire workforce.

Field meetings were held to discuss a proposed amendment to establish consistent guidance to foster resiliency and expansion of old-growth in national forests.

Also, Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, Dr. Homer Wilkes visited Milwaukee, Wis., and other cities to highlight the importance of trees in urban communities to combat extreme heat conditions.

All this and more this month's Around the Forest Service.
