WASHINGTON, D.C.—Gila Wilderness celebrated a century of solitude in June. The first officially designated wilderness area in the world, this 1924 designation preceded the establishment of other wilderness areas by 40 years.

Law enforcement officers rescued over 100 tubers from Pirates Island after they were stranded.
