Forest Inventory and Analysis: June tech transfer session
Learn how to use the latest methods for estimating how timber volume and carbon storage change over time and in response to different forest management treatments and disturbances.
The Society of American Foresters is hosting Forest Inventory and Analysis tech transfer sessions to help users better understand how to get the most from FIA tools and resources. These quarterly sessions are interactive and offer opportunities to engage with a variety of experts as they walk through key platforms, dashboards and other products.
Date: June 17
Time: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PT/1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. ET

The U.S. Forest Service Forest Vegetation Simulator is a forest growth simulation model widely used by land managers both inside and outside the agency to simulate forest vegetation changes in response to natural forest growth, management and disturbance. Recent updates offer added features, such as the ability to incorporate improved volume, biomass and carbon computation methods developed by researchers with the Forest Inventory and Analysis program.
On June 17, Mark Castle, a forest biometrician with the Forest Service, will present:
Overview on how to implement the FIA volume, biomass and carbon computation methods in the simulator
Details on what database inputs to include and how to invoke these methods in simulations
Exploration of new volume, biomass and carbon simulation output
These new methods improve tools that practitioners use to answer questions and conduct analyses necessary in project planning, NEPA and forest investment planning.
