New uniform components available for employees

July 19, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — The Washington Office Uniform Program and the National Technology and Development Program would like to announce the following new components:

  • New lightweight, packable raingear
  • A new breezer hat
  • New hiking socks

Forest Service branded rain gear (green pants and green jackt with FS logo on breast)

Raingear: The Wilderness Advisory Group asked for new raingear for their wilderness rangers. The Uniform Program will offer lightweight, packable raingear with a jacket and pants. The gear includes:

  • A jacket (FS380): Waist length, waterproof, breathable jacket shell with hood, with free range of movement design, waterproof front zipper, elastic hem shockcord, detachable hood, adjustable cuffs, underarm zippered openings and four zippered pockets on the front.
  • Pants (FS381): Lightweight, waterproof, breathable pant shell with pass-through pockets and side leg cargo pockets, with free range of movement design, zippered front fly, expandable waist, and adjustable ankles.

Tan mesh, solid hat with a tan band across the front that reads: Forest Service

Breezer Hat:  The Uniform Program and NTDP heard the concerns of the field that none of the uniform hats provided protection from the sun for an employee’s ears or neck. As a result, the program will offer an Aussie-style breezer from the Henschel Hat Company. The hat features a 3-inch brim, ultraviolet protection factor 50+ certification and a packable body, mesh crown and chincord.

Socks:  In early 2022, employees requested hiking socks in a lighter color to aid in identifying and removing ticks. As a result, the Uniform Program will offer “Thorlos,” maximum cushioned hiking socks made of 87 percent THOR•LON® Acrylic, 11 percent nylon and 2 percent elastic. The socks will be available in both black and tan. These socks:

  • Are constructed with THOR•LON® fibers for superior softness, resilience, durability, and moisture-wicking for drier, more comfortable feet.
  • Include a cushioned instep and arch for a better fit, more support, and less pressure on the feet for a more comfortable hike.

Include a ventilation panel for extra moisture control and breathability.
