WASHINGTON, D.C.—Join Research and Development scientists and others for a week of exploration about the ground under our feet, from bringing soil carbon out of the darkness and into management plans to how soil organisms help create healthier forests.

This session of SCIENCEx will be held 2-3 p.m. EDT May 6-10. The webinars unite scientists and land managers to explore the latest science and best practices for addressing large natural resource challenges across the country.

The week’s sessions are:

Monday: Why do foresters need soil scientists? Presenters are John Kabrick, Andy Colter and Stephanie Connolly.

Tuesday: How can soil science be applied to forest management? Presenters are David D’Amore on bringing soil carbon out of the darkness and into management plans, Jason Jennings on managing highly altered landscapes with examples from the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests, and Deborah Page-Dumroese on soil, silviculture and biochar as alternatives to slash pile disposal.

Wednesday: How can soil scientists and foresters build relationships? Presenters are Amy Amman and Kyle Steele on building effective relationships with foresters using lessons from the Mark Twain and Ottawa national forests, Jacquie Foss on getting to the root of forest productivity, and Claudia Cotton on the relationship between foresters and soil scientists.

Thursday: How can soil science lead to resilient forests? Presenters are Erik Anderson on how soil scientists and silviculturists can develop a common understanding of site resilience, Grizelle González on how soil organisms can help create healthier forests, and Jason Rodrigue on the National Advanced Silviculture Program training

Friday: How can research support timber management and soil science? Presenters are Derek Pierson with insights and tips for building relationships between soil scientists and foresters; Joe Sherlock on drought, fire and reforestation in the Pacific Southwest; and Zhiyong Cai and Quiangyu Yan on the processes and potential applications of newly developed biochar boards.
