USDA Forest Service Honor Guard is recruiting
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Formed in 1999, the USDA Forest Service Honor Guard honors and remembers Forest Service employees who have sacrificed their lives for the safety and security of national forests, employees and the public. The guard honors these employees by providing full honors funeral and graveside services and by participating in ceremonies and official events when called upon by the Chief of the Forest Service.
For many members, participating in the Honor Guard is the most important part of their job with the agency. It’s a way to honor fallen Forest Service employees and represent the agency at its highest standard. Members give back to the agency, fellow employees and families of employees.
Members come from across the United States and consist of members of law enforcement, fire and non-fire staff, as well as employees new to upper management. There are currently 36 members and the guard is currently recruiting.
Members must meet the following requirements:
Be a 26-0 full-time permanent employee
Participate in two mandatory week-long trainings per calendar year—one in January and one in May (location TBD every year)
Participate in one planned event per calendar year
Participate in one unplanned event per calendar year
Follow a physical training program of your choice to include strength and cardio, which is regularly followed 3-5 days per week
Be in good standing with your peers and supervisor
Practice the Honor Guard Drill 5-10 minutes per week
The Honor Guard's primary mission is to pay respect to our fallen employees who gave their lives in the line of duty. This ultimate sacrifice deserving of honor, dignity and respect allows healing to family members, survivors, employees and the community. The work is emotionally demanding and can be physically taxing.
