Insignia Art for Communication Products


The approval to use insignia art is required. Use of the insignia is protected by Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations 264.1 – 264.5.

  • Use one of the insignia art options below.

  • See your grant monitor for details on how to get approval to use the insignia.

  • Do not include the insignia on products you would like to sell unless you are an official licensee.

  • Develop a draft of the content based on the following.

    • Use the insignia art provided and do not distort or change its proportions.

    • Do not include the USDA logo, unless you are including them as a partner separate from the Forest Service. Please note that is a separate approval process.

    • Ensure the Forest Service insignia art is the same size (measured by height) as other partner logos. It should not be larger than others.

    • Do not place the Forest Service insignia first in the list of partners. Logos of Forest Service funded partners should be displayed first (to the left or on top) of the Forest Service insignia.

    • Ensure a clear space surrounds the Forest Service insignia, equal to the width of the tree in the insignia

    • Refer to the Forest Service Branding Standards (pages 4 and 5) for additional guidance and examples

  • Submit for approval as instructed by your grant monitor.

  • Apply feedback, as appropriate.

Tips for videos and other assets

  • Do not include copyrighted material without explicit written permission. Only use footage with licensed copyright, public domain, or creative commons permissions.

  • Ensure you have the rights to included music.

  • Ensure you have permission for minors to appear in photos and videos and copies of appropriate release forms.

  • Avoid including personal identifiable information, such as street signs and house numbers, in photos and videos.

  • Avoid photographing commercial firms, trade names, or logos when possible, unless they are part of the story. If your video does show a logo that could come across as an endorsement by the Forest Service, please add this text at the end of the video: “The display of trade, firm names, or commercial logos in any context within this video does not constitute or imply endorsement of any product or service by the USDA Forest Service.”
