The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

Chippewa National Forest Projects

Reissue a special use road permit for FR2540

Replacement of failed copper facility and installation of fiber optic mainline cable for future use. The cable will be buried at 35 inches. The right-of-way will be approximately 383 feet long and 10 feet wide. The installation is planned to occur in the spring/summer of 2026.

Construct and use new timber access roads on NFS lands.

MNDNR is requesting to clear and utilize U3289 as part of project 19828. U3289 with be cleared for a width of 18’ and length of 324’. Other roads that will be utilized and covered under a 7700-permit include SLR-S3396, 2130G, SLR-S3395, and 2130.

Permittee proposes to build a temporary, winter only, access road totaling approximately 5,011 feet. The northern section would be approximately 691 feet and the southern section would be approximately 4,320 feet by 12 feet wide

: Road permit to authorize the construction, use and maintenance, and rehabilitation of a temporary haul road across NFS lands to access and harvest state timber sale 19433. The newly constructed road would branch off of Forest Service Road 2957A.

FR2232C branching off FR2232 would be cleared and utilized.

The new road would branch off FR3423. It would be 1879 feet in length and 18 feet in width.

Road permit to authorize the construction, use and maintenance, and rehabilitation of a temporary haul road across NFS lands to access and harvest state timber sale 20380. The new road would branch off FR2187GA. The new road construction would be 1357 feet in length and 18 feet in width.

The State will utilize FR2131, SLR-S5057, and construct 120 feet of new road at the end of SLR-S5057.

Road permit to authorize the construction, use and maintenance, and rehabilitation of a temporary haul road across NFS lands to access and harvest state timber sale 20091.

Issue road permit to new owner as well as reroute a portion of the existing road.

East Ottertail is requesting to install, use, and maintain 6065’ of fiber optic line in a 10’ wide right of way. Three Pedestals will be installed. The project is expected to start in Summer 2026. Construction methods include directional boring and plowing.

Permittee proposes removing a non-compliant septic system and replacing it with a new system. A new 1,650-gallon combination precast concrete tank will be installed along with a lift station, 10’ x 38’ pressure bed drainfield, and connection pipes. No trees will be removed.

Permittee proposes installation of two solar panel arrays.

The overhead lines will be removed, and the existing material will be used to fill in the pole holes. The new underground will be located within the existing right of way and no additional tree clearing will be required. The cable will be buried directly into the soil using a vibratory cable plow. T

Lake Country Power is requesting to install and maintain 8,340’ or 1.58 miles of new line installed in a 30’ ROW way.

Use and maintenance of a private road crossing NFS lands.

East Ottertail is requesting to install, use, and maintain 45’ of fiber optic line in a 10’ wide right of way.

GLGT is requesting to conduct a federally mandated integrity dig. Routine inspections detected anomalies along pipe segments that may require maintenance. The dig will provide visual inspection and the ability to perform required maintenance. The work will be conducted on Line 100.

Permittee proposes replace failing septic system as part of requirements for the upcoming permit renewal. New system will have a 1,500-gallon tank and pressure mound drainfield installed. Old non-compliant drainfield and tank will be removed as part of this project. One 12-inch spruce tree will need

Permittee proposes to build three different long-term access roads for DNR timber sales and site work. 1) T141N, R25W, S27 totaling approximately 2,200 feet by 18 feet wide following the route of a previous road SLR-S3461. 2) T141N, R28W, S30 totaling approximately 220 feet by 18 feet wide.

Permittee proposes to build and maintain a gravel surface private road crossing Chippewa National Forest land to access their private property.

This project is for prospecting mineral resources (gravel) in areas directly adjacent to the currently active Jessie, Howard, Grave, Whittlestop, and Onigum gravel pits. This effort is intended to evaluate the presence and suitability of additional mineral material that may support Forest activities

The project is designed to create quality habitat for the Golden-winged Warbler, American Woodcock, Ruffed Grouse and associated species by reducing the density and age of vegetative species through brush cutting. The project will use TVA CE 30 to authorize.

Road permit to authorize the construction, use and maintenance, and rehabilitation of a temporary haul road across NFS lands to access and harvest state timber sale 20382. The newly constructed road would branch off of Forest Service Road 3406A.

Removal of old holding tank and installation of new septic system. Within LLBO reservation boundary.

Decision to approve the CPF System Road Maintenance Project which includes forest wide road maintenance activities within the existing roadway and adjacent clearing zones.

This project will evaluate gravel pit development, expansion, and closures, with a primary focus in the Walker and Deer River Ranger Districts.

Authorize reoccurrence of equipment to excavate channel bottom sediment approximately 2ft in depth, 3-6ft in width, and 50-150ft in length. Sediment spoils will be deposited adjacent to previous spoils sites.

Rebuilding stairway down to lake.

Installation and maintenance of 3,376 feet of line using vibratory plow or directional bore. Much of the line listed is existing and is planned to be upgraded to better meet the demands. This project is with the reservation boundary

The project is slated to occur in the Summer of 2026. It includes the installation of BD5 Pedestals and approximately 3429 feet of fiber in an existing right-of-way. The ROW will be 33 feet wide. The line will be plowed and directionally drilled.

Installation and maintenance of 53,211 ft of line to be installed using a vibratory plow or directional bore under roadways and water ways. Much of the line is existing and is to be upgraded to better meet demands. partly within reservation.

Install 960 feet of fiber optic cable to the visitor center, workshop, and lodge including three connection boxes.

Pipe removal will typically follow a sequential process outlined below:survey and staking of construction workspace,vegetation clearing, installation of erosion and sediment control BMPs, and site preparation;excavation and removal of pipe

Project proposes to remove 2 gates and a rock barricade, allowing motorized access to an overlook, and access to a previously closed segment of road. This segment will be added back to the Forest transportation system and MVUM.

Permittee proposes to maintain approximately 1,500 feet of an existing Forest Road 2478A Spur A, Frazer Road Spur A, by adding gravel, grading, and plowing in the winter to access property. Does not include road expansion.

Road permit to access and maintain FR2082AA, Lille Vermillion Dr NE to access private property.

FR2112B Road Permit Reissue. This is not within the boundary of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe reservation

MNDNR is requesting to improve FR2350. They want to improve approximately 3600 feet of existing minimum maintenance road from a width of 9 feet to 12 feet and clear brush and trees to a width of 18 feet.

Reissuing a special use road permit on an existing road, FR3102

The use of prescribed fire and mechanical treatments to restore fire-dependent ecosystems and wildlife habitats on 1913 acres of national forest system lands, within the proclamation boundary of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Indian Reservation.

Permittee proposes to maintain approximately 3,800 feet of existing Forest Road 3756B, Imperial Road, by adding gravel and grading surface. Road width will remain unchanged.

Establishment of Goose Lake gravel pit near Mud/Goose Lake south of Ball Club Mn. Not on LLBO Reservation

Dredge harbor utilizing a backhoe and then hauling sand to a site down Stony Point Camp Rd.

MN DNR is planning on setting up 30 game cameras within the Chippewa NF boundary for deer density surveys.

MN DNR wishes to set up 12 game cameras around Lake Winnibigoshish to monitor anglers.

The DNR is requesting to use two old skid trails and Sprue Lake HWT to access timber stands for permit B016173.

MN DNR is requesting to create of a temporary road for access across FS land. Location is depicted in the map below and I've requested the proposed route to be flagged in the field.

MN DNR is requesting a new temporary access off Alder Rd. to their harvest area depicted in the map below.

A temporary road has been requested across Forest Service land to access a State timber sale. Approximate road location is depicted in the map below.

Potlatch Deltic is requesting summer/winter access to a state timber sale that requires a temporary road across FS land.

MN DNR is requesting a new temporary access off Forest Road 2040 to their harvest area depicted in the map below.

Building a new deck

Fishing tournament weigh in for up to 20 boats and people at East Seelye Bay Campground Beach/Picnic Area for one hour.

The trail reroute section is 10 miles. Decommission old NCT segments. Constructing two parking areas and two dispersed campsites, which will include fire grates, wilderness latrines, and tent pads.

Replace rotting deck boards with new boards brown in color.

Install new heat pump/air conditioning minisplit unit on recreation residence cabin.

A current snowmobile trail has drifted off it's original designated route and now encroaches on private property. This project aims to clear trees and brush to put the route back onto it's designated path and buffer the trail from the adjacent lands.

Permittee proposes to re-roof cabins 3, 4, 8, 9, and the boat house using Atlas Castlebrook, Weathered Wood color, architectural shingles. All these roofs sustained wind damage this year.

The project includes construction of 244 feet of rock riprap shoreline protection at the Norway Beach Resort along the shoreline of Cass Lake. The project is within the LLBO

This project intends to harvest primarily aspen and paper birch to provide sunlight and growing space to midstory and understory hardwoods and improve stand health and resiliency.

Rebuilding boathouse after a tree fell on it during a wind event and the removal of two other nearby trees.

Stony Point Day Use Boat Landing is for visitor day use. This boat landing need to be dredged so visitors can safely get their boats into the harbors. We will dump the dredge material in the stony brush disposal site.

Removal of live and dead standing trees and woody debris within 10ft of the fence surrounding the Stoney Point Campground equipment storage area to prevent further damage from falling trees.

Dredging the three harbors associated with the Stony Point Campground. dredging material will be deposited at a USFS site.

Replace the warehouse roof at the Supervisor's Office

Thin about 269 acres of pine plantations. Prescribed fire on about 1,500 acres. Brushing, planting, and seeding as needed within the project area.
