Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 162,984 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 400,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 36.7 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Cougar Dispersed Camping Area

This dispersed campground area is north of Caribou developed campground on the left side of North Fork road. It is situated alongside the North Fork of the Big Wood River.

Alpine Way Trailhead

The Alpine Way trailhead begins behind the Stanley Ranger Station, enters the Sawtooth Wilderness to Marshall Lake, continues along the Alpine Way trail past Goat Lake, and connects with Iron Creek to Alpine Lake and Sawtooth Lake.

Grandjean Campground

Grandjean Campground is composed of 31 campsites near the border of the Sawtooth Wilderness and the Boise National Forest. All sites are first-come, first-serve. It is situated in an old growth ponderosa pine forest. The Idaho Centennial Trail heads south along the Payette River, ultimately reaching a lush alpine paradise filled with alpine lakes. Salmon River Area

The Salmon River Area follows Hwy 75 east along the border of the SNRA White Clouds Wilderness and the Salmon Challis National Forest. Lower O'Brien Campground is composed of 10 campsites including 1 double-site on the Salmon River located in a lodgepole pine forest. All sites are first-come, first-serve. Snyder Springs Picnic Area

This picnic area is located to the east of Stanley along the beautiful Salmon river. It is an excellent for relaxing along the Salmon river and picnicking. Hiking, fishing, and viewing the wildlife and scenery is excellent here on the edge of the White Clouds Wilderness area. This site does not have drinking water. This area is first-come, first-serve. 

Sunbeam CCC Hotsprings/Bathhouse Interpretive Site

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built this bathhouse in 1937. At one time it contained pools and tubs.

Sunbeam Dam

Sunbeam Dam was built on the Salmon River in 1910. It provided power for one year before it was shut down. The dam was partially blown up in 1934.
