Seasonal Hydrologic Technician

The US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station will soon be hiring seasonal hydrologic technicians to gather field data. Crews will work on a variety of projects including surface erosion studies, stream bed sediment sampling and conducting inventories to help understand the environmental impacts of roads. Field crews will conduct detailed GPS-based road inventories using the GRAIP (Geomorphic Roads Analysis and Inventory Package) road inventory system. The work will be conducted from a vehicle and on foot.

Type of Positions: Crew members. The two-person crews will work closely together all summer collecting data. Crews will have the privilege of visiting many national forests throughout the greater northwestern U.S. from Montana to northern California.

Locations: Crews will be based in Boise, ID and/or Seeley Lake, MT. Some crews may have limited bunkhouse accommodations, and other crews will camp out.

Salary: :  Positions will be filled at the GS-4 ($14.07/hr.) and GS-5 ($15.74/hr.) levels depending on experience.

Work Schedule:  Full-time. Typically, the work schedule will be 10 hours per day, 8 consecutive days per two-week hitch.

Qualifications: Course work in geomorphology, hydrology, geology, earth science, forestry, GIS, physical geography, or engineering is preferred. Previous field work experience is highly desirable. Candidates should be organized, self-motivated, and have an excellent driving record. A current state driver’s license is required. Successful candidates will be physically fit, team oriented and have the capacity to enjoy long field days and the peaceful solitude of nights in the woods.
