3.3 Billion Board Feet of Timber

The Forest Service Sold Nearly 3.3 Billion Board Feet of Timber in 2019

2019 was a record-breaking year for America’s national forest and grasslands.

To mark our historic accomplishments, we have highlighted how our efforts helped to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of our Nation’s forest and grasslands to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

At the Forest Service, our values are embedded in connecting people to nature and to each other. In 2019, we accomplished even more and sought to answer one crucial question. How our services connect to people.

In just twelve months, our agency treated millions of acres, forged new state partnerships through Shared Stewardship agreements, and actively supported rural economies by providing jobs and sustainable forest products across the nation.

  • Sold nearly 3.3 billion board feet of timber, more than we have in the past 21 years.
  • Supported over 25,000 veterans and young Americans with jobs that helped strengthen our nation’s infrastructure, boost local economies, and improve forest conditions via the 21st Century Conservation Corps.
  • Treated over 100,000 acres to improve forest health and protect nearby communities from wildfire via the Joint Chiefs Landscape Restoration Partnership.
  • Reduced wildfire risk on over 4 million acres.
  • Signed Shared Stewardship agreements with 12 States and the Western Governors Association to perform restoration work and improve the health  sustain life for generations to come.
  • Initiated projects that more than tripled timber harvest volume under the Good Neighbor Authority.
  • Partnered with 38 states to take on projects with state forestry agencies to perform restoration work under the Good Neighbor Authority.
  • Developed a risk-mapping tool that will help build fire-adaptive communities in 2020.
  • Opened Access to nearly 560,000 acres of national forests and grasslands in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation as part of their “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt” initiative.

Under the Forest Stewardship Program, we assisted or educated 328 landowners, covering a total of 300 acres within the priority acres identified in our current Forest Action Plans for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Treated over 100,000 acres to improve forest health and protect nearby communities from wildfire via the Joint Chiefs Landscape Restoration Partnership. Reduced wildfire risk on over 4 million acres.

Developed a risk-mapping tool that will help build fire-adaptive communities in 2020.
