Engineering
The Forest Service operates and maintains infrastructure assets that directly support the management and public use of 154 national forests and 20 national grasslands. These lands encompass 193 million acres in 43 states, the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and combined cover an area twice the size of California.
Engineering activities include planning, design, construction, maintenance, and preservation of a wide range of assets that support forest operations, including fleet, buildings, dams, recreation sites, wastewater systems, drinking water systems, communication towers, bridges, roads, and trails. This infrastructure is critical to providing safe access to the nation’s forests and grasslands, delivering recreational and economic opportunities, and for providing for emergency services to the public. Additionally, the agency’s infrastructure allows Forest Service staff and partners to meet the various missions of managing the nation’s forests and grasslands. The Forest Service plays an integral role in the health, wellness, and daily lives of citizens and communities nationwide.
Beyond supporting the Forest Service directly, we work closely with other Federal agencies, state and local governments, tribal governments, and many partners and other private stakeholders such as non-governmental organizations, non-profits, and contractors to better meet the Forest Service mission of caring for the land and serving the people for generations to come.
