Applying Knowledge Globally

The Forest Service groundwater program has a long history of assisting Forest Service International Programs on water resource stewardship and wetland conservation in Africa, Asia, and Mexico.

Recently, the groundwater program provided expertise in wetland hydrology for a mission to Ruoergai Marsh, China, the most important breeding area for Black-necked Cranes in Asia. Forest Service staff worked with local managers and researchers to develop a monitoring plan and make recommendations for wetland habitat conservation and rangeland restoration.

The overall goal was to document the impacts of livestock and groundwater pumping on breeding habitat ecohydrology, and building local capacity for management and monitoring in the reserve.
