Lassen National Forest Projects

This project is intended to restore a degraded section of North Digger Creek Channel, reduce the sediment entering the Battle Creek watershed, provide effective aquatic organism passage, protect NFS infrastructure, and enhance aspen stands.

The purpose of this project is to successfully reforest suitable portions of the landscape deforested by the 2014 Bald and Eiler Fires and to reduce the spread of known and new invasive plant infestations within the fire areas.

Project objectives are fuels reduction, forest health improvement and watershed restoration. Activities include:Plantation thinning & windrow redistribution; fuels thinning; prescribed burning; and transportation management.

BNSF is requesting a road easement allowing access to portion of the railroad where a siding (extra track for passing trains) will be constructed and maintained within the existing BNSF Right-of-way.

Issue 20 year authorization with established expiration date to provide water to Boy Scout of America Camp Fleischmann and include existing features. Cost Recovery.

Special Use Authorization for existing telephone line to BSA Camp Flieschmann; 0.5 mile; 20 year term

The purpose of the Backbone Project is to improve forest health and diversity, improve fire resilience, improve wildlife habitat resilience, and increase carbon sequestration.

Two existing culverts on the North & South Forks of Bailey Creek will be replaced with bridges to eliminate barriers to the passage of aquatic organisms and damage to road crossing when rivers are at high stage.

Proposed activities include: salvage, treatment of non-merchantable trees, removing hazard trees along roads and trails, treatment of activity slash, site preparation, and planting, maintaining existing roads, and constructing temporary roads.

Removal of encroaching conifers, protection of a spring complex, vehicle-based damage of a meadow remediated and pre-commercial thinning in plantations.

Project Name Changed to: Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Electrical Utility Pole Improvement Project-Big Meadow 2101 Blitz Circuit. Improvement work on 12 PG&E power poles along south shore of Lake Almanor accomplished.

The Lassen National Forest (LNF) proposes to issue new special use authorization for road use to new property owners that need legal ingress and egress to their land.

A special use permit would be issued to allow CalTrans to drill four boreholes to investigate the geology of the area. The information gained will be used for the reconstruction of the Hwy 44/89 curve near Big Spring.

The proposal is to repair areas of the Bizz Johnson National Historic Trail (BJT) damaged by the Hog Fire in July 2020 on the Lassen National Forest, specifically replacement or repair of drainage structures that were damaged or destroyed.

This project is designed to enhance the historic flood plain, allow natural flows to resume, and address infrastructure damage and tree mortality caused by flooding.

Project focuses on priority areas in the vicinity of Spalding, and residential and recreational lake access roads. The primary goal for this project is to promptly reduce safety hazards and meet fuels and reforestation objectives economically.

Implement fuels reduction surrounding a recreation residence tract and an organization camp; riparian and soil resource protection; recreation site improvement and expansion; decommission unauthorized OHV trails identified under Travel Management;

California Department of Parks and Recreation has submitted an application to amend their existing permit as a concession campground to create a host site with utility services.

Remove fire-killed trees and site preparation for planting of native conifers.

Fire-damaged trees along Highway 89 on National Forest System land will be removed near the Hat Creek Work Center and Honn Campground.

Lassen National Forest proposes to issue Calfire a new special use permit to install a 10' x 10' metal sea container at the Dyer Mountain Communications Site. They will move their existing communication equipment from the lookout into the container.

Reconstruction of the Humbug Summit snow survey site that was destroyed in the Dixie Fire. The proposed station includes a shelter, rocket style rain gauge, multiple sensors such as, barometric pressure, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed

Implementation of the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group Forest Recovery Act (HFQLG), as amended by the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment FSEIS ROD.

Approximately 0.51 miles of fence will be constructed in two portions across Childs Meadow pasture to tie in with an existing fence on adjacent private land.

The project is intended to re-establish a safe, sustainable trail crossing over Chips Creek along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail for hikers and stock users.

Lassen National Forest proposes to construct approximately 36 miles of new single-track trail and other improvments out of the Jonesville Snowmobile Park and to add parking and restrooms at Humboldt Summit and NFS Roads 27N06/27N36.

Analyze livestock grazing on Collins/Morgan Springs North Allotment; continuation of project initiated in 2008.

Restore meadow hydrology and habitat by redirecting flow into historic remnant channels along a reach of Pine Creek while filling the degraded channel and ditch to match the floodplain elevation.

Amend the forest plan to adopt the conservation covenant objects for PG&E donated parcels.

The Cornaz Lake Bouldering Project is being proposed to protect a wet meadow system, allow riparian vegetation to become re-established, and protect resources as directed in the 2010 Lassen National Forest Travel Management Record of Decision.

Analysis for livestock grazing on the Coyote Springs Allotment.

Implementation of the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group (QLG) Forest Recovery Act and will entail the development of Defensible Fuel Profile Zones (DFPZs), Group Selection Harvests and Area Thinning for enhancement of habitat for Seral Species

The Crossroads Project is designed to mprove resilience of stands to future disturbance events, decrease fuel loads, enhance oak woodlands, improve ingress and egress, and refine the transportation system for safe public access and travel.

Project objectives: Fuels reduction; forest and watershed restoration. Activities: Meadow and hardwood enhancement; variable density thinning; fuel reduction; biomass removal; prescribed burning; watershed improvements; transportation system mgt.

Analyze livestock grazing on the Dixie Valley Allotment

This project will have fuels reduction and forest restoration objectives. Activities include meadow and aspen enhancement, variable density thinning, prescribed burning, watershed improvements and management of the transportation system.

HFQLG-Vegetation Management projects to meet forest restoration objectives; fuel reduction & establishment of DFPZs; maintain and improve habitat opportunities for wildlife; protect and improve riparian areas; and aspen enhancement.

Removal of windthrown and hazard trees which impact campground safety and operations from the Eagle Lake Recreation Area

Project will treat invasive plant occurrences using an Integrated Pest Management approach. Manual, chemical, biological and/or cultural treatment methods will be adapted to fit changing conditions. Also, 16 Osprey nest platforms will be built.

Renew existing permit for Eagle Nest Recreation Residence Tract water system

Use of prescribed fire in an eastside pine ecosystem to control natural fuel buildups and reduce the potential for severe wildfires.

Implementation of the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group Forest Recovery Act, as amended by the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment FSEIS ROD.

Proposed activities include: salvage, treatment of non-merchantable trees, removing hazard trees along roads and trails, treatment of activity slash, site preparation, and planting; maintaining existing roads, and constructing roads.

The proposal is to bury a fiber optic cable along the shoulder of the existing access road (known locally as Walking Stick Lane) to the cell site authorized under special use permit to Edge Cellular.

The ALRD proposes to construct and place turtle basking structures in Finley Lake to provide additional basking habitat for Western pond turtles

The USDA Forest Service Lassen National Forest proposes authorizing Frontier Communications to install, operate and maintain a broadband fiber optic cable on lands within the Lassen National Forest.

The Forest Service was a cooperating agency, assisting the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in that Agency's geothermal leasing analysis and decision. The BLM issued a record of decision on 12/17/2008.

The overall purpose of this project is to hasten the recovery of lost and/or degraded habitat for northern spotted owls by re-establishing habitat connectivity and viability.

Construct livestock corral with sorting pens adjacent to a 500-acre gathering pasture in the active Poison Lake Grazing Allotment. Project consists of installing posts, wire, and metal panels to accommodate gathering and sorting cattle.

Hat Creek Ranger District is proposing forest health and resilience treatments, near Badger Mountain in Old Station, CA, to reduce wildfire risk, promote forest health and diversity, protect resource values, and restore ecological processes.

Lassen National Forest proposes to issue new special use authorization for road use to a new property owner in need of ingress to their adjacent private land.

The Halls Flat Wind Thrown project is designed to salvage wind thrown trees, recover economic value and reduce fuel accumulation of material blown down in the wind event of February 6th 2015. The project area is approximately 2,000 acres.

Analyze livestock grazing on the Harvey Valley Allotment

Removal of windthrown and hazard trees that impact safety and operations of campgrounds and recreation sites on the Hat Creek District. Portions of Highway 89 would also be treated to protect the traveling public.

The Hat Creek Debris Removal and Stream Bank Stabilization Project is proposed to stabilize the channel and minimize further sedimentation, protect state and federal infrastructure, and improve visitor safety.

Caltrans submitted an application to construct and maintain a secondary driveway access to the existing Hat Creek Maintenance Station. This driveway will allow access to a new wash-rack building within the maintenance station property.

The project ensures public safety and improves forest health at recreational facilities and admin. sites on the Hat Creek R.D., by removing dead, dying, and structurally damaged, bark beetle infested or diseased trees and thinning overstocked trees.

The Lassen National Forest (LNF) proposes to issue new special use authorization to the SETI Institute for the operation and maintenance of the Hat Creek Radio Observatory.

The purpose of this project is to enhance and create environmentally and economically sustainable recreation opportunities that protect forest and watershed resources and meet public needs within the Hat Creek and Old Station areas.

Name Change to: Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Electrical Utility Line Extension Project-Rising River 1101 Circuit. Providing electricity to private property in the Big Springs Estates area of Old Station, CA.

The Hat Creek Ranger District is proposing the Grayback and Procter Creek Wells Project to provide two non-potable water sources on NFS lands to be used for fire, forest management activities, road maintenance, and wildlife and livestock watering.

Removal of fire damaged trees at the Hat Creek Work Center.

Re-route and reconstruct motorized trail segments, decommission the eliminated trail segments, restore or improve dispersed recreation areas within Inventoried Roadless Area; develop a staging area outside Inventoried Roadless Area.

Provide permanent public access at the north end of the High Lakes OHV Area.

Removal of windthrown and hazard trees along the Highwayy 44 corridor on NFS lands

The primary goal of this project is economic recovery of timber value lost from wildfire and mitigating public hazard by removing dead trees along open system roads and trails. The secondary goal is reforestation, within and outside of salvage areas.

The USDA Forest Service, Lassen National Forest proposes issuing PG&E a permit to resolve a security fence trespass and allow for upgrade and maintenance of the fence surrounding the Indian Springs Gas Pressure Limiting Station.

Installation of an emergency backup propane 50kw generator on a new 4 ft.by 10 ft. concrete pad and a 500 gallon propane tank on a new 5ft.by 12 ft. concrete pad.

This project is intended to restore two trail bridges along the Great Shasta Rail Trail at Lake Britton to provide continuous public access for non-motorized trail purposes across the lake and State Route 89.

Salvage of dead and/or dying trees within approximately 200 acres of the Day Fire area on the Lassen National Forest.

The Forest Service is evaluating management of over snow vehicle (OSV) use on the Lassen National Forest for the designation of LNF system roads, trails, and areas where OSV use will be allowed.

Approve continued operation, maintenance and use of existing distribution and transmission powerlines and infrastructure for Pacific Gas and Electric located within designated corridors on the Lassen National Forest

Little Bear Restoration is proposed to increase forest health and diversity with variable thinning and fuels treatments. This project includes research proposals for future management activities and was **originally part of the Grizzly Project.

Restore & enhance hydrologic function of stream and meadow conditions within the Pine Creek watershed. This will be accomplished by redirecting the flow of Pine Creek to natural valley low, and removing obstructions.

QLG project/funding. Aspen, oak, and pine enhancement. Enhancement in riparian areas includes road decommissioning, road construction and subsoiling, and planting riparian vegetation.

The goal of this project is to enhance meadow habitat by re-connecting the stream to a multiple channel system and increasing stream base elevation.

Falling and piling of danger trees along Ponderosa Way. Approximately 15 acres.

Hand thinning of small trees and brush along designated Forest Service roads to reduce fuels.

HFQLG - Vegetation management project intended to increase fire and insect resiliency within pine plantations by reducing inter-tree competition, brush competition, and hazardous fuels.

The Mudstove project proposes to salvage harvest windthrown trees and trees structurally damaged by the 2/6/2015 extreme wind event. Proposed project is approximately 250 acres.

Reduce wildfire intensity, modify fire behavior by constructing DFPZs. Improve forest health & diversity by creating multistoried, all-aged, species diverse landscape. Treatments could include thinning, group selection, underburning.

The Forest Service proposes to treat priority invasive plant infestations on up to 8 acres annually, across approximately 13,617 acred using a combination of manual (e.g. hand pulling), cultural (e.g. seeding with native seed), and chemical methods.

The Lassen National Forest proposes to issue a new special use authorization for installation, operation & maintenance of 7 stand-alone weather stations. Each site will consist of a wooden pole holding instruments to measure temperature, RH and wind.

Install two permanent remote automated weather stations (RAWS) for both the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS) function and operation, and the LNF/ALRD weather indices for project activity level (PAL) & sale activity level (SAL) modeling.

Stabilize and restore Knickpoint and spill channel below Philbrook Reservoir. Reduce ongoing channel erosion and sedimentation resulting from reservoir operations.

Restore hydrologic connectivity/function to improve water quality/ quantity, timing and duration of flows, and stream and riparian condition. Focusing on impediments to flow:incompletly decommissioned roads, railroad grades, and earth-fill structures

Treat invasive weeds in the Diamond Mountain area.

This restoration project will encompass: surface fuels treatment for fire hazard reduction; thinning for ponderosa pine, silver sage, meadow and aspen enhancements; noxious weed treatments; and road improvements.

The USDA Lassen National Forest proposes authorizing Plumas Sierra REC to upgrade, operate and maintain an underground utlity corridor on lands within the Lassen National Forest boundary.

This is a proposal to salvage harvest fire-killed and fire-injured trees, remove danger trees, and promote the re-establishment of fire-resistant, shade-intolerant conifer species through reforesation within the Chips Fire perimeter in the Lassen NF.

Re-issuing of the permit for the marina and campgrounds at Eagle Lake.

The purpose of this project is to capture the remaining forest product economic value and benefit, provide for safety through danger tree removal, and reforest suitable portions of the landscape deforested by the Reading Fire.

Hazard tree felling and removal is proposed to reduce public safety hazards along portions of certain roads, trails and facilities within nine national forests. We expect to complete three zone-level analyses and nine decisions.

The purpose of the proposed project is to help restore a functioning and productive forest ecosystem by re-establishing natural conifer cover on severely-burned areas. The project is located on the Hat Creek Rim near Old Station California.

The Robbers Creek Watershed EA project objective is to restore watershed health by implementing treatments that improve the ecological resilience of aspen, meadow, stream and forest habitats.

The project consists of seismic modifications to the Pit 3 Tunnel Rock Creek Crossing structure. Five support frames and their footings will be retrofitted so that the structure can withstand earthquakes without significant structure damage.

The Rocks Restoration project proposes fuels reduction, vegetation management, aspen and meadow habitat improvement, and reforestation of some moderate to high severity burned areas.

Hand or mechanical thinning around approximately 19 proven rust resistant sugar pine (RRSP) trees to improve their health and vigor and reduce surrounding fuel. Approximately 50 Acres will be treated.

Thin areas around proven rust resistant sugar pine (RRSP) trees to increase sustainability by reducing direct vegetative competition, wildfire risk, over-wintering habitat for cone boring insects, and squirrel access to crowns.

Treat ~80 rust resistant sugar pine trees to repel mountain pine beetles using an environmentally friendly synthetic anti-aggregation pheromone. Dollups of up to 70 g of SPLAT Verb will be manually applied ~6' up each tree bole.

Develop a quarry for localized source of rock gravel for road maintenance and watershed improvements. An area of ~10 acres would be excavated for extraction, stockpiling and crushing of rock material. **Originally part of Grizzly Restoration Project.

Series of informational tours in Lassen National Forest to educate the public. All activities will be accessed via public roads and trails. Issue Special Use Authorization for up to 10 years.

Amend Land and Resource Management Plans for ten (10) Forests within the Sierra Nevada region by modifying Management Indicator Species (MIS) lists and associated monitoring strategies.

Partial QLG acres - This is an aspen, oak & pine enhancement project with a fuels reduction component. Activities would include thinning, & oak & pine enhancement. Fuels activities would emphasize reduction of dead & live understory ladder fuels.

Lassen National Forest proposes to continue authorizing the use & occupancy of National Forest System land by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) for their existing snow courses, sensor stations & hydrometeorological stations.

This project is to reduce fuel levels and increase fire resiliency on ~3,000 acres of forested and brush-dominated habitat within the Soldier Mtn. WUI, reforest stands burned in the 2005 Brown Fire, and restore meadow habitat along Soldier Creek.

The LNF proposes a limited set of activities that could be implemented to address the purpose and need. The activities can be categorized into two different types: activities at road-stream intersections and rehabilitation of non-NFS routes.

Replace an existing expired special use authorization for the continued operation and maintenance of the Spalding Transfer Station, with no change in the authorized facilities, and no increase in the scope and intensity of activities.

Remove three road-stream crossing structures that are barriers to aquatic organism passage. Replace with new structures that allow aquatic organisms to pass above and below the road crossings and that are capable of passing a 100-year storm flow.

The Storrie Meadows project is a 220 acre meadow restoration project on National Forest System lands. Colby Creek, Willow Creek West, and Snag Lake meadows were identified for restoration because of their ecological attributes and degraded state.

The Hat Creek Ranger District is proposing the removal of fire-killed and injured trees in order to ensure public safety on approximately 200 acres of National Forest Land burned in the Sugarloaf fire. About 65 of these acres would be reforested.

The USDA Forest Service Lassen National Forest proposes issuing a permit to TowerCo for the maintenance and use of a forest road and construction of a spur road to access a communications site located on private lands.

This project proposes to 1) Apply mechanical vegetation treatments to brushfields to reduce & maintain a decreased fire risk and 2) Examine the effects of scale & residual density in the regenerative openings of true fir stands.

The Lassen National Forest proposes to amend T-Mobile's existing communications lease to include the installation, operation and maintenance of a 48 KW diesel emergency backup power generator.

This project would authorize the transfer of Wyden Amendment funds to the Tehama County Resource Conservation District to implement fuels reduction activities along roads in private timber lands to complement fuels reduction activities in NFS lands.

This project would reduce vegetation density on 70 acres surrounding the Table Mountain Communications Site in order to reduce the risk of wildfire and minimize signal interference to the microwave path that supports critical infrastructure.

This project is to improve the resilience of timber stands to future disturbance events such as mortality due to insects, disease, drought, and wildfire by reducing tree densities and ladder fuels and enhancing growing conditions for larger trees.

To control livestock there is a need to construct a fence along the west side of Forest Road 32N02 from the railroad tracks to the north to separate Pine Creek Valley from the Feather Lake area.

Mixed-conifer forest veg mgt project designed to 1)reduce haz fuels within WUI;2)increase forest health and veg diversity;3)provide an economic benefit to the local community;4)Protect ecosystems and wildlife habitat;5)Improve forest health in RCAs

Project focus: Treating priority areas in Whaleback Fire footprint by reducing safety hazards along roads, fuel breaks & treatment areas; recover economic value of burned trees; reduce fuel loads; accelerate reforestation; & treating Aspen stands.

The purpose of this proposed HFRA project is to improve forest health, and to retain and restore ecological resilience thereby ensuring a functioning and sustainable ecosystem.

This Project is being developed to respond to conditions created by the Sheep Fire of 2020. The area has been evaluated for the need to reduce safety hazards along roads and to re-establish forest cover in areas of high burn severity.

Implementation of the Herger-Feinstein Quincy Library Group (HFQLG) Forest Recovery Act, as amended by the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment FSEIS ROD

This project will respond to conditions created by the Wilson Fire, which burned 186 acres on Lassen National Forest land. It includes 132 acres of salvage logging, 104 acres of mechanical site prep and planting, and 3 acres of hand thinning.

Project aims to recover the ecological potential of meadows, aspen, riparian and forested vegetation in the project area by restoring their form and function to a self-sustaining state that is resilient to a range of future conditions and wildfire.
