Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Barber Cabin

The Russian River Campground area has been reopened. Reservations are open for Barber Cabin starting on December 21, 2024 and are scheduled to close on March 1, 2025.  A 16 x 20-foot log cabin on Lower Russian Lake surrounded by spruce forest and meadows with mountain views. Barber Flat Rental Cabin

The Barber Flat cabin site was established for administrative use by the Forest Service in 1923, and was used prior to that by the Barber Lumber Company. At the time, the Forest Service used a cabin already on-site as a guard station and then built a new one in 1927. The current cabin and outbuildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935, and the cabin today looks much as it did back then. Guests…

Barber Lake Picnic Site

Barber Lake Picnic Site is a perfect picnic stop off on the Snowy Range Scenic Byway.  The picnic site provides picnic tables and a vault toilet. Barber Lake does not hold much water, but nearby Libby Creek offers fishing.

Barbour Fork Trailhead

Barbour Fork Trailhead is located south of Idaho Spring and offers a small network of roads for OHV opportunities. The road crosses through aspen and mixed conifer. Mountain biking and dispersed camping are also popular in this area.

Barclay Lake Trailhead

Provides access to: Barclay Creek Trail 1055 which provides access to Wild Sky Wilderness via spur trails 1055.1 and 1055.2.

Bard Springs Recreation Area

Small campground with Adirondack-type shelters in a remote mountain setting on a small scenic stream. It provides a good site for a base camp for hikers in the Caney Creek Wilderness.

Bark Camp Lakeshore Trail (Forest Trail #211)

The Bark Camp Lakeshore Trail is the perfect setting to fish and view nature and wildlife, including beaver. The trail is flat, with minimum elevation change as it circles Bark Camp Lake. Bark Camp Recreation Area

Barker Lakes Loop

Barker Pass Pacific Crest Trailhead

This trailhead provides access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Heading north, the trail enters Granite Chief Wilderness and intersects the Western States Trail. Heading south, the trail enters Desolation Wilderness. This section of teh PCT coincides with the Tahoe Rim Trail. 

Barker Recreation Area

Barkshed Recreation Area

4/7/25: Closed until further notice due to flooding. Barkshed is a primitive camp near a clear mountain stream. It was the old "Barkshed Forest Camp" and was the show-off place for visitors to the forest. The picnic pavilion at the top of the hill was used for many such events. Barnaby Buttes #70

This 2.8 mile trail through wildlife habitat includes vistas and stream crossings. A few dispersed campsites are located along the trial that once served as the access to Barnaby Buttes lookout tower. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for travel on access road.

Barnes Creek Picnic Area

Barnes Field Group Campground

Barnes Field serves as a group campground in the summer months, and it remains open on a first-come, first-served self service basis during the winter months. Located near the scenic Peabody river, there is nearby access to hiking trails (and cross country ski trails in winter).
