The Mad River Ranger District is located on Highway 36 approximately 50 miles east of Highway 101 and the Eureka/Arcata area and 100 miles west of Interstate 5 and the cities of Redding and Red Bluff. Madison Gulf / Old Jackson Road North Trailhead

The Madison Gulf trail leads through the Great Gulf Wilderness to Madison Gulf, a very steep and rocky area with several ledge outcroppings, bouldery areas and a chimney with loose rock (not recommended for descent). Old Jackson Road, part of the Appalachian Trail, has moderate grades and decent footing as it leads to Pinkham Notch.

Madison Ranger District

Madison Ranger District is the easternmost district on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge and surrounds the town of Ennis on three sides. Campgrounds, picnic areas and fishing access recreation areas are available on this district. Please be "Bear Aware" and check out our Bear Country Safety information before you recreate on the Madison Ranger District. We want you and the bears to enjoy the forest!

Madison River Campground

Madison Campground is a spacious campground covering nearly 7 acres located in southwestern Montana just beyond the banks of its namesake river. It is approximately 34 miles south of Ennis and about 45 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. The ten-site campground borders a Douglas Fir covered hillside to the west, with the Madison River just across the road to the east.

Madrone Cove Campground

***Campground closed due to hazard trees and construction. Madrone Cove Campground is a boat-in only campground located on Bullard's Bar Reservoir. There are 10 single family campsites with vault toilets. Bullard’s Bar Reservoir provides yearlong fishing opportunities for an array of fish. This is a great place for swimming, boating, and water skiing.

Magone Lake Campground

Magone Lake Campground is situated along its namesake lake. Visitors enjoy fishing, canoeing, swimming and hiking. The campground is set in a forest of White Fir and Ponderosa Pine. Magone Lake covers about 50 acres and features both deep holes of up to 100 feet and shoals on the north side. Magruder Crossing Campground features 6 campsites on the Selway River, and a vault toilet. Site will accept RV's or trailers to 30'. Stock can be kept in this campground. This was the crossing on a route established for commerce between Lewiston and Virginia City, MT during the gold rush.
