Wilmington
Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Office
- Service First Agencies: FWS Carterville Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office and and FS Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
- Activities: Co-location.
- Contact: Keith O'Loughlin, Administrative Support Assistant, FWS, 618-997-6869
- Additional Information: FWS employees and equipment are housed at the FS office, increasing safety and decreasing costs by spending less time traveling and enhancing agency presence in the operational area. Currently seven full-time and four seasonal FWS staff are working out of the Midewin facilities just north of Wilmington. "The agreement saves the government time and money, and allows us to put more of our resources on the water in the local area," said Sam Finney, Assistant Project Leader for the Carterville Fish & Wildlife Conservation Office (FWCO). Other benefits include resource sharing, future collaboration and camaraderie between employees of the two natural resource agencies. Initial project work is focused on keeping non-native Asian carp out of the Great Lakes but future plans are to become more of a full-service FWCO that also works with native fish and their habitats.
