How should seed lot data be submitted?

Three formats are available for submitting data: Excel spreadsheet, Access database and a pdf form (electronic or hardcopy). GENDAT data can be used to populate the Excel spreadsheet using copy/paste. You may use whichever format you prefer. Paper copies of the datasheet should be shipped with the seed lots. Recent viability test data and seed weights should be entered. If these fields are blank the NSL will conduct those tests. Please include copies of any seed collection agreements or permits with other agencies that apply to the seed lots.

How much seed should I send?

The USDA Agricultural Research Service, National Center of Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP) in Fort Collins, CO recommends submitting a minimum of 500 seed with a maximum of 3,000 seeds per seed lot. If 500 seeds are not available, submit what is available but as close to 100 seeds as possible. If there are more seeds than are to be submitted to Ft. Collins and the collector does not wish to store them, the National Seed Laboratory can store them.

How should the collections be packaged?

Individual seed lots are packaged in paper or plastic. If the individual lots are packaged in paper, they need to be put in a moisture proof container before sending to the National Seed Laboratory. A food freezer storage bag will be sufficient. Each individual container must be clearly labeled with the correct ID number supplied on the seed lot data sheet.

How should collections be sent to the National Seed Laboratory?

Pack seed containers and seed collection forms in a box marked "Germplasm Conservation" and ship via next day delivery, Monday through Thursday to the National Seed Laboratory, 5675 Riggins Mill Road, Dry Branch, GA 31020.

How will I find my collections in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN)?

The National Seed Laboratory will assign each seed lot a Food Safety Net Services (FSNS) number to identify the seed lot in GRIN. The FSNS numbers will be reported to the collectors for cross referencing their data.
