The Department of Agriculture has proposed rescinding the 2001 "Roadless Rule." This rule places national, blanket restrictions that hinder forest management activities to reduce wildfire risk and improve forest health. Removing these restrictions would give local forest managers more direct authority to determine when areas should remain roadless. This handout shares facts about roadless areas and how rescinding the rule would impact land management.

This monitoring summary report provides a high-level overview of national best management practices in monitoring completed in fiscal years 2015 through 2022 at more than 4,350 sites across the United States. The report supports land management plans and project-level decisions and identifies areas for improvement.
