Your national forests and grasslands are 193 million acres of vast, scenic beauty waiting for you to discover. Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 162,984 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 400,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 36.7 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Mono Creek Campground

This small 2-acre campground is nestled in a thick timbered area. Mono Creek is located across the road. Basic facilities are provided including vault toilets, a day-use picnic area and drinking water for the 5 designated campsites. Scenic hiking trails are nearby. Pets are welcome. Pettengill Campground

This campground is named after an early homesteader, the "Wild Man of the Mountains" George Pettingill. His grave is nearby. He is widely admired in the area although he was somewhat of a hermit. The campground is located where the Wise River meets Pettengill Creek.

Wade Lake Campground and Picnic Areas

Wade Lake Campground is located in southwestern Montana on the shore of it’s scenic namesake lake. It is approximately 43 miles south of Ennis and 35 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. West Fork Madison Campground

This is a small campsite with 7 designated sites directly adjacent to West Fork of the Madison River with tent camping only. Vault toilets, water, garbage services and fishing access are available.

Laramie Peak Trailhead

This 4.2 mile trail is at the base of Laramie Peak in the North Laramie Range. Parking and restroom facilities are available at the trailhead. No overnight parking is permitted at the trailhead, however, if you are overnight hiking from the trailhead, please park in the dispersed camping areas. North Laramie River Trailhead

In the eastern portion of the North Laramie Range, this trailhead accesses prime trout fishing and beautiful canyon experience. The trailhead offers a parking area, with dispersed camping allowed. North Espanola Area

The Espanola District extends west of West of Highway 84 on the road to Abiqiui.  There are several trail heads for hiking and horse back riding within a short distance of Espanola.  Many of these trails are open in the winter season when other parts of the Forest are closed.

Jumbo Camp Campground

This high-elevation campground is situated in lodgepole pine near a flat, open area in an historic gold mining area. It is often used by horse enthusiasts and hunters.

Kirks Fork Trailhead

Kirks Fork trailhead serves as the starting point for Kirks Fork Trail #830 (a National Recreation Trail leading to Anderson Butte), and provides a toilet, stock loading ramp, fire ring and parking space for one camper vehicle and several horse trailers.

Lake Creek Trailhead

This trailhead serves Lake Creek Trail #204 leading to Fish Lake in the Gospel-Hump Wilderness and beyond. It features dispersed campsites with a toilet and hitching rack. Motorized access past the trailhead is extremely rough and ATVs are recommended.

Leggett Creek Campground

Just 14 miles west of Elk City off Highway 14, Leggett Creek campground provides easy access to larger RV's and trailers in its five campsites, serviced by a metal fire ring and one SST (Sweet Smelling Toilet). There are no refuse receptacles provided. It provides public fishing access to Leggett Creek and the South Fork of the Clearwater River. Limber Luke Campground and Trailhead

This trailhead serves Anderson Butte National Recreation Trail (#505). Located in open timber, with a toilet, stock loading ramp, fire ring and parking space for five camper vehicles, it is very popular with big game hunters.

Mackay Bar Campground

Resting near the north bank of the mighty Salmon River, Mackay Bar campground offers three campsites, tables and fire grates. Parking is limited. Access to this campground is via a very rough, winding road with many tight switchbacks. Low-range, 4-wheel drive is recommended, with no trailers. Note: Be considerate of adjacent private ownership. Be Aware of rattlesnakes and poison ivy!

Mallard Creek Campground

Mallard Creek Campground provides five campsites situated in the tall timber near Mallard Creek. Although there is a toilet, there are no tables or fire grates.

Johnson Bar Campground & Group Site

Johnson Bar Campground provides picnic areas, toilet, drinking water, RV/Trailer pads and seven campsites with a reservable group camping spot as well! The picnic area and some campground sites are wheelchair accessible, and there is a nice swimming beach. Rafting in the river is a popular activity in the spring and anglers will enjoy the catch and release fishing in the Selway River.

Knife Edge Campground and River Access

Located along the breathtaking Wild and Scenic Lochsa River, about fifteen minutes east of Lowell, ID, families, campers, anglers, kayakers, floaters and boaters may enjoy this five unit, two acre, free-use campground and Lochsa river/boat access site. A changing room and  a single vault restroom is also provided. The Campground will accomodate 40-ft. RV's.

North Fork of the Clearwater Corridor

Two main routes into the corridor make it possible to tour the area in a loop, with little backtracking. Road 247 from the small community of Headquarters is a paved, mostly winding road. Road 250 is paved for several miles from its junction with State Highway 11 just south of the town of Pierce.

Lochsa/Highway 12 Corridor

The corridor winds along two wild and scenic rivers, the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River and the Lochsa River. Scenery is beautiful through the corridor, ranging from dense forests to shrubfields created by wildfires in the early 1900s. Canyon walls are steep, and rock outcroppings are impressive.
