Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Big Bend Campground

Very popular with hunters during the hunting seasons. The mining town site of Gold Creek, within the Island Mountain Mining District, is 5 miles south of Big Bend on county road 745. Very little remains of the town as most of it was moved or torn down in the 1920s. A plaque at the town site contains additional information. In an aspen grove surrounded by wide open country, 15 miles northeast of Wildhorse Reservoir.

Big Bend Campground

This campground is located on a sagebrush and open conifer forest flat adjacent to the Cache La Poudre River. There are eight sites available, including three walk-in tent sites. Each site contains a tent pad, fire grate, bear locker and picnic table. There is a bighorn sheep viewing station along the entrance road to the campground.

Big Bend Creek #488

Forest Trail #488 (Big Bend Creek Trail) is 6.6 miles long. It begins at Forest Road #780 (T48N R5E Section 34) and ends at Forest Trail #486. The Big Bend Creek Trail is open for the following uses: hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, motorcycle trail riding

Big Bend Day Use

From eastbound I-80, take Big Bend exit and continue east one-quarter mile to the day use area.  From westbound I-80, take the Rainbow Road exit and continue west for one and one-half mile to the day use area. Elevation:   5,900 Facilities:   3 picnic tables, 3 grills Potable water and vault toliets are available at the Big Bend Group Campground.

Big Bend Group Campground is located right off I-80 on Old Highway 40, behind Big Bend U.S. Forest Service Fire Station. Big Bend Picnic Site

The Big Bend Picnic Site is located along Highway 40 in a lodgepole pine forest setting with scenic views. There are seven sites with tables and fire grates. The picnic area is open year-round however accumulated snow during the winter and early spring may limit parking and hinder access.

Big Cimarron Campground - Ouray RD

Big Cove Campground

Big Cove Campground is a wonderful location for a family outing away from life in the big city. The campground has water, showers, flush toilets and trash service. It’s in a mixed conifer forest along the east shore of Frenchman Lake. Reservations are available for 21 of the 38 campsites. There is one group site. Campsite amenities include paved RV / parking pad, picnic table, fire ring and grill.

Big Cove Overflow

Big Cove Overflow Campground only opens when all other Frenchman Lake Recreation Area campgrounds are full. Amenities at this rustic campground include unpaved parking and vault toilet. Campers are welcome to use the showers at Big Cove Campground.

Big Cow Creek Trailhead

This is a remote trailhead located at the end of the Gros Ventre Road.  It is located in open sagebrush flats adjacent to the Gros Ventre River.
