Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Pelican Guard Station Day Use Area

Pelton Creek Campground

The campground is at the eastern edge of the Platte River Wilderness, and has 16 sites.  It is a single loop with one side running parallel to Pelton Creek among Lodgepole pines. Some sites overlook the creek and a meadow. Pemigewasset Overlook

    This medium-sized lake fills nearly 50 acres of Peña Blanca Canyon in the foothills of the Atascosa and Pajarito Mountains. Penas Negras #32

The elevation at the trailhead is about 9,300 ft.  The trail has a gradual slope throughout and is the longest trail in the Cuba Ranger District.  Destination is the San Pedro Parks about 8.2 miles from the trailhead where the trail meets trail #51 (Las Vacas). Water is scarce along the trail.  Trail # 418 (Perchas) is crossed at about 2.5 miles.  It is 4.2 from the junction to trail #51.

Peninsula (Olallie Lake) Campground

Penitente Canyon, a Bureau of Land Management Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) is an internationally recognized climbing area, offering more than 300 incredible sport climbing routes. Penland Lake Campground

Pennant Bar Openlands

One of the most expansive managed openland areas in the Shawnee, Pennant Bar Ranch is several hundred acres of grasses, shrubs and lowlands.  It has several fishing ponds and offers opportunities for hunting and trapping.  

Pennsylvania Creek Road TH #611

Pennsylvania Creek Road climbs up the valley and eventually after approximately 2.5 miles you can turn left and drop down to Indiana Creek Rd (FDR 593). At this point you can continue to Boreas Pass Rd (FDR10) or visit the old mining town of Dyersville and Warriors Mark Mine. Another popular route involves making a loop from Pennsylvania Creek Road to Indiana Creek Road.
