Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Union East Campground

  Union Reservoir is set in a granite basin with expansive mountain views. The reservoir has lots of small islands and is kept mostly full. The campground is adjacent to the reservoir, nestled in red fir and lodgepole pine forest.

Union Flat Campground

Union Flate Campground is located 6 miles east of Downieville on the North Yuba River along Hwy 49. It is surrounded by oak and maple trees. Hiking trails are nearby. This campground is the only place on the North Yuba River for recreational mining. An area downstream from from the campground is available for recreation mining. Recreational mining is hands and pans only. Mining claims are in surrounding area.…

Union Valley Reservoir Area

Located in the Crystal Basin at approximately 5,500 feet in elevation. Under "Find an Area" use the plus sign to the left of the name to drill down to a facility in that area.

Union West Campground

Union Reservoir is set in a granite basin with expansive mountain views. The reservoir has lots of small islands and is kept mostly full. The campground is adjacent to the reservoir, nestled in red fir and lodgepole pine forest. Bear boxes are available at this campground. A few parking spots for day users. Campsites have their own parking spaces.

Unknown Pond North Trailhead

This trail crosses to the Kilkenny Ridge Trail and is a shorter, but steeper route to scenic Unknown Pond than from the Southern Trailhead. There are designated tent sites and an outhouse at Unknown Pond, but not at the trailhead. Mill Brook Road is gated closed in the winter.

Unknown Pond South Trailhead

It is 3.3 miles from the trailhead to the Unknown Pond Tent site and the serene waters of Unknown Pond. There are no amenities at the trailhead, but an outhouse and tent sites can be found at Unknown Pond. The Fish Hatchery Gate is closed from 4 pm-8 am, so hikers will not be able to drive into or out from the Trailhead during those times. FMI (603) 449-3412

Unknown Pond Tentsite

Nestled next to calm waters of Unknown Pond, this tent site is located off a spur of the Unknown Pond Trail. There is an outhouse, 6 designated camping spaces and reliable water from the pond or stream.

Up Up 40-Foot Lookout Tower

This lookout is a 40-foot wooden tower perched on a beautiful rock pinnacle. A hiking trail is available for those that wish to explore the Eagle Peak roadless area. The lookouthas a fantastic vista for views of the St. Regis River drainage and the high alpine country.

Upper Bear Summit Trailhead

The Upper Bear Summit Trailhead is a signed site that includes an information kiosk and a loading/unloading ramp for animals. It serves Bear Summit (#286) and Bear Summit West (#288) trails.  All trailheads have space for parking.

Upper Beaver Creek Campground

The campground is composed of two sections laid out under ponderosa pine. Parking on several sites is side-by-side providing little privacy between sites. The nearby Beaver Creek Reservoir features a boat ramp and fishing for brown, brook and rainbow trout and kokanee salmon.

Upper Bells Canyon Reservoir

This body of water is part of the Little Cottonwood drainage.

Upper Bench #625

The Upper Bench Trail #625 is used as a connecting route between the Johnson Basin Road, FSR #425 and the Calcord Road, FSR #411.1A.  Since this trail contours a hillside at a fairly level grade for the entire distance, it is a relatively easy trail to hike.  It passes through primarily oak brush and aspen stands and a few intermittent spruce/fir stands.…

Upper Bonito Dispersed Recreation Area

The Upper Bonito Dispersed Recreation Area is located at the end of Forest Road 107 in Bonito Canyon. It is a popular dispersed camping site with access to the adjacent White Mountain Wilderness Area and its trails.

Upper Box Creek Trailhead

Upper Box Creek Trailhead is located on a point overlooking Upper Box Creek reservoir at an elevation of nearly 8,900 feet.  There is a vault restroom, information kiosk, and gravel parking.  Upper Box Creek can be a great fishing opportunity, plus there is wildlife viewing, hunting, hiking, and OHV riding on designated routes.  Please pack-out what you pack-in.
