Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species selects NGLVC in Ashland 2010 Invader Crusader because of outstanding efforts battling invasive species
The Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species selected the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center (NGLVC) in Ashland as a "2010 Invader Crusader" for outstanding efforts battling invasive species. The Center and its partners rigorously incorporate invasive species messages into educational programming, management, exhibits, and events.
The partner organizations that staff and govern the NGLVC - U.S. Forest Service, U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Park Service, University of Wisconsin-Extension, Wisconsin Historical Society, and Friends of the Center Alliance, LTD - help people connect with the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the Northern Great Lakes Region through visitor information, community awareness, and educational programs.
"The NGLVC's dedication to being part of the solution has been an inspiration to others," commended Peter Murray, Chairman of the Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species.
Here are some examples of what the Center has to offer:
* Educational programs that integrate invasive species issues into the curriculum.
* Invasive Free Zone and Native Plant Garden.
* Exhibits and trails with messages identifying invasive species and educating visitors on methods of species dispersal and the harm caused by invasive species.
* A gift shop carrying books and guides used to identify invasive species.
* Events, such as Public Lands Day and the Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival, which build invasive species awareness.
* Collaboration with organizations like the Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area to control invasive terrestrial and aquatic plant species.
"Having all of these partners in one highly visible public venue amplifies our message and keeps invasive species at the forefront of public consciousness in the region," said Jason Maloney, Center Director. The NGLVC serves as a practical learning site and a public meeting place where invasive species and the problems associated with them are highlighted.
