Where to find rare native plants and flowers on the Wayne.

Wildflower Viewing Areas are sites of high botanic interest selected by botanists for the native plants and flowers found within them. Two of these areas can be found on the Wayne National Forest. Consider visiting these sites during your next trip to the forest. Don't forget your camera!

Lake Vesuvius Rock House Trail (Ironton District): The diverse plant communities of the Wayne National Forest are home to many beautiful wildflower species. The forests of southern Ohio are unusually diverse because they are found within a climatic and geologic transition zone and contain diverse topography and landforms. An excellent place to view wildflowers in the spring, is the Rockhouse Trail in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. More on this Wildflower Viewing Area…

Wildcat Hollow Trail (Athens District): Wildcat Hollow is the most popular hiking trail on the Athens Ranger District. Miles of scenic trail wind along ridgetops and stream bottoms; allowing hikers to venture through white pine plantations, open meadows, deep deciduous forests, along quiet streams, and past rock outcrops. The trail offers 5 and 15 mile loop trails overlooking a beautiful landscape. More on this Wildflower Viewing Area…
