Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Ellicott Rock Wilderness

Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located at the intersection of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, with approximately 3,400 acres of 8,300 acres. Ellicotts Rock TR431

Ellicotts Rock Trail 431 is located Southeast of Highlands, NC.  The trail is 7 miles long and traverses through Ellicott Wilderness which connects North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.  

Elliot Ranch OHV Road 3N22

Elliot Ranch OHV Road 3N22 runs from State Highway 138 to Cleghorn OHV Road 2N47 and is about one mile in length. Important Note The section of 3N22 from State Highway 138 to Summit OHV Staging Area is only open to street legal vehicles. Non-street legal vehicles must be carried via haul vehicle to the staging area - staging is not permitted along the highway.

Elliot's Ridge TH #1889

The Elliot Ridge Trail provides panoramic views of the area including the Gore Range. The trail is an old double-track road that follows a broad ridge and enters the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. Elliott Creek Campground

Located on the northwest shore of Green Mountain Reservoir, this campground has vault toilets and a stay limit of 14 days. Many activities occur on the lake including fishing, motor boating, sailing, canoeing, and water skiing. The boat ramp is across the reservoir at the town of Heeney.

Ellis Trailhead, Ellis Trail 202 & FR 488

The Ellis trail is 2.7 miles long and begins across the road from the lower parking area of Ellis Traihead. The trail is named for George Ellis who homesteaded Ellis Ranch, in the Sandia Mountains from the 1880's until his death in 1912. Elm Flats Canoe Landing

This location marks the start of the permitted portion of the River. The parking area for this landing is located on a hill above the landing, which requires a walk up from the area. This stretch of the river is narrow.

Elm Trailhead

This trailhead is part of the Monday Creek OHV Trail System. The Monday Creek area of the Wayne National Forest provides some excellent opportunities for off-highway vehicles (OHVs). This trail system, north of Nelsonville, provides approximately 75 miles of designated trails to off-highway vehicle riders, mountain bikers, and hikers. Loading ramps are available at the New Straitsville and White Oak Trailheads.

Elmwood Recreation Area

Emerson Campground

Located on the east side of the South Warner Wilderness, this campground and picnic area also serve as the staging area for the Emerson Trail into the wilderness. This free campground is fairly secluded due to the narrow, steep, rough, dirt access road. Campsites are mostly shady and set back from the parking area in the trees.
