Your national forests and grasslands are 193 million acres of vast, scenic beauty waiting for you to discover. Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. San Juan Mountains

This area includes the portion of the San Juan Mountains that are on the Norwood and Ouray Districts of the Uncompahgre National Forest.  This area is also known as the Mountain Division.

San Luis Rey Picnic Site

San Luis Rey Picnic Area offers 17 picnic sites with tables, water, and vault toilets. This handicapped accessible area is available all year providing a relaxing waystop and fishing access for visitors. It is first-come, first-served. The Picnic Site is temporarily closed for Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB) spraying, the Picnic Site will reopen Tuesday May 21st, 2024.

Sand Prairie Campground

This 21-site campground is located in a mixed stand of Douglas-fir, Western hemlock, cedar, dogwood and hazelnut. Hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers can access the 27-mile Middle Fork Willamette Trail at the south end of the site.
