Whiteside Picnic Area
This picnic area has four sites. It is located at 8,905 feet. The site is open year round and is first-come, first-served basis. There is no water available at this site.
Whitetail Cabin
Whitetail Cabin is a registered historic site and was once used as a ranger station for the Whitetail Reserve in the early 1900s. The 2-room cabin sleeps 4 and comes furnished with 2 sets of bunkbeds with mattresses, a table with 4 chairs, electric range, electric refrigerator, cleaning equipment and some basic cooking and eating utensils. A wood burning stove is provided, along with a limited supply of firewood.
Whitetail Campground
Located in the southeastern corner of the Bessey Ranger District on the Dismal River, this 10-site campground has a hand pump for water, nine horse corrals, picnic tables, fire rings, and modern vault toilets. It is situated on the OHV trail system. No electricity is available.

Whitetail Picnic Area
Whitetail Picnic Area is a 10-unit picnic ground nestled in the densely wooded area of Whitetail Creek Drainage. Fire grates are available and a vault toilet. There is ample parking space available for most sizes of vehicle.
Be aware that the road to the picnic area crosses Whitetail Creek via a low water crossing that may be impassable during periods of high runoff.

This remote campground and boating site rests on the north shore of the Salmon River. Access is via a rough road with many tight switchbacks, not recommended for vehicles towing trailers. Whitman Route Interpretive Site
Users will be introduced to an interpretive display on the Marcus and Narcissa Whitman route to their future mission located near Walla Walla, Washington. The overlook offers a panoramic view into Meacham Creek Canyon. This interpretive site is barrier free and nice for picnicking.

At various points along the trail views of the Sawatch range can be seen. Whitney peak rises up from the north lake shore to an elevation of 13,271 ft.

The Whitney Portal is 13 miles west of Lone Pine, CA, at the end of Whitney Portal Road. It is in a heavily wooded canyon, with towering granite cliffs on either side. The area includes 3 campgrounds, a picnic area, fishing pond and a stream. Trails from Whitney Portal provide access to the John Muir Wilderness and Sequoia National Park.
