Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Dalton Lake

Historic Area Dalton Lake is approximately a 2.8 acre lake on Little Elk Creek. The upstream watershed drains about 2,000 acres. The lake is about 15 feet deep. The Forest Service and South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks drained and dredged the lake in 2011 - 2012. Dalton Lake has populations of rainbow and brook trout. Dan Moller Cabin

This is a two level cabin 16 feet x 20 feet. The cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, propane wall furnace for heat and an outside toilet.
