Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Sawyer River Road Snowmobile Trailhead

This trailhead accesses Sawyer River Road which serves as a snowmobile trail in winter (shown as Sawyer River Trail on snowmobile maps). It also connects to the Meadowbrook Trail and Bear Notch Road to make a large 25 - 30 mile loop. Multiple hiking trails such as Signal Ridge and Sawyer Pond Trails can also be accessed from this trailhead in winter.

Sawyer Rock Picnic Site

A small picnic area that has picnic tables and a vault toilet available.

Saxon Mountain

Saxon Mountain Road north of Georgetown is a steep shelf road with many switchbacks. Good view of Georgetown and surrounding mining history. The road is wide most of the way but very narrow in a few places. Rock falls are a common occurrence with the possibility that a large boulder could block the road at any time. A high-clearance/4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

Sayers Gulch Trailhead

Sayers Gulch Trailhead accesses the Sayers Gulch Trail #1465, a 1.4-mile trail in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. The road to the trailhead is rough with a significant stream crossing at the beginning. High-clearance 4-wheel drive recommended.

SB Cove Shoreline Area

Just past the day-use parking lot is the sandy terrain of SB Cove Shoreline where avid campers can park their RVs and trucks close to the shoreline when water levels are low. No wonder it’s a favorite for avid campers! This site offers beautiful vistas of surrounding mountains and moss-covered boulders.

Scab Creek Trailhead

This trailhead offers separate parking areas for backpackers and equestrians, corrals and toilet facilities. It is located adjacent to the Scab Creek campground, which along with the trailhead are administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Scaler Guard Station

Historic Scaler Guard Station, located 78 miles north of Kemmerer, Wyoming, provides an excellent hideaway for cabin camping enthusiasts. The cabin allows pets and horses. Hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-road vehicle trails are in the vicinity. Scarlet Oak Trailhead

This trailhead is part of the Monday Creek OHV Trail System. The Monday Creek area of the Wayne National Forest provides some excellent opportunities for riding off-highway vehicles (OHVs). North of Nelsonville, this trail system provides approximately 75 miles of designated trails to off-highway vehicle riders, mountain bikers, and hikers. Loading ramps are available at the New Straitsville and White Oak Trailheads.

Scarp #421

The Scarp Trail #421 begins at an intersection with the Ridge 70 Trail and dead ends at Scarp Ridge at the Raggeds Wilderness boundary. The trail climbs a steep grassy hillside which is covered in wildflowers in the spring and summer. Schnebly Hill Vista Observation Site

There are typicaly seasonal road closures to the vista (Merry-Go-Round and above) as well as the occasional closure of the entire lower road from Huckaby on up.
