Sumter National Forest

Sumter National Forest has three districts: the Long Cane, the Enoree, and the Andrew Pickens. In response to the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Helene, the Long Cane Ranger District remains closed until hazardous conditions improve and assessments can be completed. Sun Park #444

Sun Top Lookout

Suntop is one of the more accessible lookouts in the MBSNF, with a one lane dirt and rock road to the top and a newly completed gentle trail from parking to the new accessible ramp and deck.  It is an operational lookout, staffed by volunteers from end of June to end of September.  On days when it is not in service, the road is gated below the lookout, but the ½ mile walk up to the lookout is gentle…

Sun-Lava Paved Path

This 5.5 mile paved multi-use path within the national forest land travels in and outside the boundaries of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The non-motorized path travels from the Lava Lands Visitor Center to the Benham Falls area, down to Sunriver.

Sunbeam CCC Hotsprings/Bathhouse Interpretive Site

Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built this bathhouse in 1937. At one time it contained pools and tubs.

Sunbeam Dam

Sunbeam Dam was built on the Salmon River in 1910. It provided power for one year before it was shut down. The dam was partially blown up in 1934.

Sunbeam Resort

This resort is on the Yankee Fork and Salmon Rivers.  It has an on-site restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating. You can also pick up great souvenirs.

Sunburst Campground

Located in Pisgah National Forest on NC 215, Sunburst Campground was once a logging camp. Now nine primitive campsites offer quiet camping near the West Fork, Pigeon Rivers. Sites have picnic tables, tent pads, and lantern hooks. Flush toilets in bath house, and firewood available for purchase.

Sunburst Picnic Area

Area offers parking, bathrooms, picnic tables, water source, and trash. Trails nearby for hikers, bikers, and horses. Day Use area is adjacent to campground.

Sundell #1863

The Sundell Trail traverses through a variety of forest types on the lower portions of Red Table Mountain south and west of Gypsum Creek. This trail becomes faint and hard to follow in spots. Trailheads are located at either end of the trail along Gypsum Creek road (FDR #413) and are easily accessible by car. The only big climb is from the first, or north, trailhead, so start from the south end for an easier hike.

Sundew Campground

This campground has 22 units, all with lake access and/or lake views. There are bear boxes on site for food storage. This is a popular campground with options for boating and swimming.

Sunflower Wildlife Management Area
