Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Superior Area

On the western edge of the Lolo National Forest, this area has unique offerings such as the historic Savenac Tree Nursery and Visitor Center, access to the "Rail Trail"/Route of the Hiawatha where you can bike the path of a historic train route, a couple of lookout rentals with wonderful views, and trails to alpine lakes.

Superior National Forest Headquarters

Superior National Forest Scenic Byway

Surface Creek Snowmobile #741

Surprise Lake Trailhead #62

Surprise Lake is in the northern portion of the Gore Range in the Eagles Nest Wilderness. The beginning of the trail passes through aspen groves and spruce/fir forests. Eventually, the trail climbs steadily up to the lake. Surprise Lake is nestled in the trees and is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. An abundance of wildflowers can be seen from mid-June through early July along this trail.  

Surveyor's Ridge North Trailhead

This trailhead provides access to the Surveyor's Ridge Trail. It has parking for 8 vehicles.

Surveyors Camp Campground

Dispersed camp site with no improvements. No traffic control such as paved loop road and parking spurs that you find in "developed" campgrounds, and no water system. Pack out garbage.
