Your national forests and grasslands are 193 million acres of vast, scenic beauty waiting for you to discover. Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Rio Grande Reservoir Boating Site

This is a primitive boat ramp and reservoir access road about 1/2 way along the Rio Grande Reservoir. There is a vault toilet here. Not recommended for large boats and long trailers.  Motors are allowed on this large reservoir.  Fish are stocked during summer months.

Rio Grande Reservoir Picnic Site

This site overlooks the Rio Grande Reservoir and the Weminuche Wilderness to the south. It consists of a small parking lot and some picnic tables. The view is great but access down to the reservoir from here is very steep and not recommended.

Rio Pueblo Fishing

Fishing on the Rio Pueblo. Forest Service photo by Zach Behrens. One of the most popular trout streams in the state. Paralleled by highway 518 along its entire length.   Headwaters above Tres Ritos (Angostura and Alamitos Creek). Many campgrounds.  

Rio Puerco Campground

Rio Puerco is a remote primitive campground. There are no fees and reservations are not accepted. Uses: camping, fishing,  and picnicking. Facilities:  picnic tables and 1 portable toilet during summer months only. There are no fire rings.  Special Instructions: Can accommodate up to 20-foot RV's.  No potable water or hookups.  

Río Sabana Recreation Area

The area offers scenic views of the Rio Blanco watershed and the coastal areas of Naguabo and Humacao along with inspiring views of the mountains and the coast as well as access to rivers and water play opportunities. The gate is closed but it is possible to park by the gate and walk the road up to the recreation area site. Ripley Lake

Surrounded by hardwood forest, Ripley Lake Recreation Area is one of the few fishing spots in this part of the forest, and it is used mostly for primitive fishing and picnicking. Ripley Lake is a 20-acre lake with an average depth of 12 feet. The lake is stocked yearly with catfish. As you drive in, the road is tree-lined with oak and hickory. Ripple Creek Overlook Interpretive Site

Ripple Creek Overlook Interpretive Site provides a nice rest stop along the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway.  The site provides picnic facilities and restrooms.  Camping is prohibited within 1/4 mile of the Overlook.

Ripple Creek Pass

Ripple Creek Pass is on the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway between Meeker and Yampa.  Many dispersed camping sites are available along the Byway near the Ripple Creek Overlook. This road is not plowed in the winter.  The White River Snowmobile club grooms a trail on the road.

Ripplebrook Store

The Ripplebrook Camp Store seasonally offers camping supplies, food, maps, and souvenirs to forest visitors. The store is located about 0.7 miles from the Ripplebrook Campground near the junction of Highway 224 and Forest Road 46. Ripstein Campground

Ripstein Campground is normally available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are 10 tent-only sites. The majority of tent sites have food lockers to deter habituation of black bears.     

Rito De La Olla Fishing

When accessable the Rito De La Olla can be accessed via Highway 518 to Forest Road 438. It is currently unaccessable due to bridge construction.

Rito Hondo Reservoir Boating Site

Rito Hondo Area Rito Hondo reservoir is currently refilling. Fish stock is young and not fishable for 3-5 years. This site is a small reservoir that is also a natural fishery for Brook Trout. Small boats and electric motors are allowed, but gasoline motors are prohibited. The site offers good parking and dispersed camping away from the shore.
