South Fork Day Use Area

Due to impacts from the Wallow Fire, the South Fork Campground on the Springerville Ranger District has been converted from a campground to a day use area.  

South Fork Family Campground

This family campground is located at 6,400' in elevation in a pine/fir forest near the Santa Ana River along Hwy 38 between Angelus Oaks and Big Bear Lake. There are 28 sites. Each site accommodates a maximum of 8 persons. First come/first serve; no reservations accepted. Open during the summer and fall months only.

South Fork Fryingpan #1922

This trail is an access to the national forest that is seldom used. It is a very wet area going through spruce/fir trees and follows the Fryingpan River. Due to vegetation there are no views of the surrounding areas.

South Fork Group Campground

South Fork Group Use Site #5

This site is reservable from late May to late September each year. It is located within the South Fork Campground along the South Fork of the Clearwater River on Highway 14 toward Elk City. Site #5 is along the river.

This well marked trail follows the South Fork of the Fryingpan River. The trail is fairly easy hiking and stays in trees for the majority of the trip. After 3.5 miles you will come to Deadman Lake. South Fork Pilgrim Creek #1084

South Fork Pilgrim Creek Trail #1084 travels from the Pilgrim Creek valley bottom and ends at the head end of the South Fork of Pilgrim Creek drainage on FSR 2710. Both the lower and upper trailhead are accessible by open Forest System road. The trail crosses the South Fork Pilgrim Creek just up the trail from the lower trailhead.  This crossing can be challenging and dangerous during peak flows.
