Shanks Trailhead

Access the Shanks Trailhead from Rapid City.  Travel Highway 44 west for 5 miles, turn North (right) onto Forest Road 603.  Travel 0.5 miles, trailhead will be on left in the bottom of the quarry.

Shanks/Schroeder System

Just minutes west of Rapid City, this combination of 21 miles of trail and numerous roads provide users with everything from wide two tracks, to narrow windy motorcycle trail.  The terrain is typical of the eastern Black Hills, with exposed limestone making the trails more technical and rough in areas.  There are two trailheads for parking in this area.  These trails are open May 15-December 15.

Shannon Campground

Shannon Campground is small and tucked away along the upper reaches of Marijilda Creek, a pleasant little brook that winds through a setting of tall trees and green grass. Shannon Creek Campground

Shannon Creek Campground is situated on a forested slope leading down to the shores of Baker Lake. The site is located along the Baker Lake Road (Forest Service Road #11) approximately 23.3 miles from State Route 20. Shannon Lake Trailhead #323

Trail Length: 0.88 mile. A short hike to a small lake between Old Highway 2 and the Grambauer Trail #319. The lake lies in a low lying mostly timbered basin with little elevation gain. The lake is shallow and does not hold any fish. Trail closed yearlong to all wheeled motorized vehicles.

Shaw Lake Boating Site

Shaw Lake Boating site is a small impoundment regularly stocked with trout during the summer. This is a small graveled ramp to launch small fishing boats. Parking is very limited here. This small lake is only suited to row boats or boats with small trolling motors.

Shaw Ridge 17E06

Length: 8 Miles. Shaw Ridge - 17E06. Black Diamond. Most difficult. Open to Motorcycles/ATVS / 4WD. This route leaves the Twin Rocks route on a spur ridge that drops into the Alamo Creek drainage and dead ends. A very steep section of trail exists at the end of this route where specialized equipment is recommended. This section is recommended for advanced riders.

Shaws Fork Campground

This campground provides access to trailheads and is popular among hunters. This site is also near the historic Civil War battlefield in McDowell, VA.

Shay Ridge South End Trailhead

This trailhead marks the south end of the Shay Ridge Trail.  

Sheafman Trailhead

Sheafman Trailhead has adequate parking for both cars and trailers. It offers access to Sheafman Creek Trail #82, Sheafman, Knaack and Aichele Lakes and the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. No facilities.

Shearer Creek (558)

The Shearer Creek Trail #558 is 7.8 miles long beginning at CR 240, Florida Rd. and ending at Forest Road 076, Red Rim Road. Just before Forest Road 076, the trail meets up with Missionary Ridge Trail #543. Distance (one-way): 7.8 miles Minimum/starting elevation: 7,600 feet  Maximum/ending elevation: 10,200 feet (junciton with FR 076)

Shedroof Cutoff #511
